Call it the reason why Millennials can’t afford real estate. Call it the food staple of the instagram-obsessed. But it’s certainly hard to ignore the cultural phenomenon that is Avocado Toast. Not only are smashed avocados on thick slices of bread pretty to look at and instagram worthy,  but they’re also packed with nutrition! Avocados are incredibly high in Vitamin K, C, B5, B6, and E, folate, potassium, have no cholesterol or sodium, are low in saturated fats, and is plant-based and low-carb as well.

Avocado toast can be found in many cafes and restaurants across the city, but Liberty Village’s great newish addition, Brodflour,  gets our pick as the best avocado toast in the neighbourhood. Brodflour does so much right. They mill their own flour before coming up with stunning sourdough,so the resulting avocado toast is uniquely their own. There are plenty of ways to customize your avocado toast as well so it’s plenty possible to make your avocado toast be as original as you are.

For those that haven’t been, Brodflour can be found on Pardee Avenue and is a bakery focusing on artisanal sourdough and rye products, using heritage ancient grain from local Ontario farmers. When it comes to avocado toast, Brodflour has two main selections. The first is an avocado and egg sourdough bun with sliced egg, tahini, cucumber, lemon, and salt and pepper. This may not be your traditional avocado toast but it gives you that extra little kick for when you want something more. We can’t emphasize enough how absolutely delicious the Brodflour sourdough is, especially in combination with the avocado and egg.

The second and more traditional avocado toast option is on rye bread which uses an avocado mash alongside some lemon, chili flakes, black sesame seeds, and salt and pepper. Brodflour’s avocado on rye is equally delicious to the sourdough, a little less to purchase, and will certainly satisfy most people’s craving. Again, there’s a myriad of ways to customize and add ingredients on your toast to create the exact taste you want. It’s absolutely recommended as a must-try for anyone in the neighbourhood and is served by one of the best bakeries in Toronto’s west end. Give it a go, you won’t regret it!
